Possible answer for Einu:
Overwhelming emotions can often times be too much for a mere human body to handle and the excess emotion has no other way of escaping the body than to be released through tears...hence tears of joy, tears of anger, tears of sadness. I think because if everyone were to hold onto their emotions for too long, then they'll explode or implode (spontaneous combustion)!
